ABOUT RÖRSTRANDS SIGNATURE
From 1730s Rörstrand was the only porcelain factory in Stockholm and in Sweden. So there was no need for a detailed signature – It simply wrote Stockholm + date of production. This changed in 1758 when another factory Marieberg was established. Consequently Rörstrand started to use the name Rörstrand when signing objects.

As Rörstrand started to produce flintware they also started using a different signature often pressed into the objects – sometimes different combination of numbers and letter that offer no real help when it comes to dating the objects. That was used until 1884.

In 1884 Rörstrand starts using the crown signature and was used until year 2000.

In 1937 the crown signature had an addition. Three numbers was sometimes used to communicate the date of production. The first two numbers indicated the year of production and the third one what part of that very year the production was carried out. During the 1940s they added Sverige to the signature which in 1951 was changed to Sweden. In the 1960s another type of signature appears on porcelain, VDN. It´s a sort of quality sign that tells us what kind of material the objects are made of and also what kind of qualities they have. The signature always contains a letter, either B=bone china, F=flintware, P=porcelain or S=stoneware. The numbers 555 as in the picture means that there is no risk for the glazing to crack, that the porcelain can stand all types of food and that it can be used in a dishwasher at 75 degrees Celsius.

In the year 2000 Rörstrand enters the new millennium with a new, more modern signature. One out of three crowns is still present. The signature is still used, even after the factory moved abroad in 2005.
